Cleaning & Polishing Silver Jewelry - All silver, pure and sterling, will tarnish with time due to exposure to the atmosphere. Sulfides in the air cause silver to tarnish.
The best way to polish silver jewelry is to use a jewelry polishing cloth. NEVER use a commercial silver dipping solution. The chemicals in these solutions can do more harm than good to the jewelry. This also goes for copper jewelry. Using a jewelry polishing cloth on copper jewelry will restore the shine when tarnishing occurs. Polishing cloths cost only a few dollars and can be purchased at most stores that sell jewelry, and also at many drugstores. A jewelry polishing cloth can last for years.
Storing your silver and copper jewelry in plastic ziplock bags when not being worn will keep the jewelry clean & polished, since continuous exposure to air and moisture is what causes oxidation or tarnish.
Cleaning & Polishing Copper Jewelry - Dipping copper jewelry in a small solution of lemon or lime juice with a dash of salt will clean and restore shine to copper jewelry. Rinse the piece off well after dipping and dry before storing. I have also tried grapefruit juice have received good results. Vinegar will also work, although I find lemon juice to be the best. Use the polishing cloth to add extra luster and keep the piece shining between cleanings.
